Trending is a term used on newscasts to refer to stories that are most talked about by the public. These stories are highlighted through special graphics, which can be inserted over existing programming on television or radio broadcasts. They may also be presented through a special alert crawl during regular newscasts. Previously, breaking news events that warranted interruption of non-news programming (or even a network newscast) were typically limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but now 24-hour news channels frequently interrupt programming for these types of breaking news. The graphic is typically accompanied by a special music cue and the station identification of the network affiliate involved.
