Breaking news is a television or radio news program interruption that breaks live coverage to cover an urgent story, often of national interest. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was reserved for major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or for severe weather events requiring immediate coverage (which typically required a short-form news report during regular programming, rather than an alert crawl or cut-in).
