A breaking news story is a television or radio news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network broadcasters, regularly scheduled newscasts) for national and local coverage. A breaking news event is usually announced with a countdown sequence from the network, followed by a graphic that identifies the event and provides a link to more information. At times, lower thirds and other graphics will also be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, programs would often be interrupted for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming.
