Breaking news is a term used by television and radio stations to refer to events that require immediate, nationwide coverage. These events usually cause current non-news programming to be interrupted, with a special graphic (often called “Newsflash” or “Special report”) and distinctive music cues to indicate an alert to the viewer. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was often indicated via a cut-in to a network newscast, or through a ticker during regularly scheduled programming. This is less common now that many news networks maintain anchors available for live interruptions at any time.
