Breaking news is an urgent news story that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming (and, in some cases, regular scheduled network newscasts). A national network will usually alert its affiliate stations, telling them to “stand by” for the breaking news event and to expect a countdown sequence. A special graphic is then shown, with a distinctive opening music cue, and the network feed begins to interrupt the regular program. In some cases, the network may integrate analysis about the breaking news story through analysts in-studio or via phone, satellite, or broadband. Occasionally, the breaking news report may last for multiple hours or even days.
