Breaking news is a television or radio news report that occurs during a time of urgent, breaking events that require immediate attention. Such events can include severe weather or other natural disasters, terrorism attacks, political events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy or other important developments requiring nationwide coverage and causing multiple stations to interrupt regular programming. When a network breaks a story, it typically alerts all affiliated stations to stand by and switches to a countdown sequence, which is then overlaid with a graphic and a distinctive music cue. This is also known as a newsflash or special report.
