When a breaking news event occurs that requires immediate or near-immediate coverage, a national network will interrupt its regularly scheduled non-news programming with a special newscast. This is known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report.” The break will usually feature an opening graphic with distinctive music, and a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to communicate a sense of urgency. This is often seen with severe weather events, such as tornado warnings.
