Breaking news is a form of television and radio news reporting that provides coverage on urgent events that may require a national network to interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour news channel, regular ongoing live newscasts). It usually involves an open graphics package with a distinctive music cue, and then an on-screen ad asking viewers to stand by for an interruption. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of breaking news coverage was typically only used for events that would require many stations to interrupt their normal broadcasts, such as a presidential assassination or severe weather event.
