Breaking news is an event that elicits a sudden interruption of regular non-news programming (or in the case of a network, regularly scheduled network newscasts). Typically, the program’s feed will be interrupted with a countdown sequence, followed by a graphic indicating the breaking news, and finally a live feed of a network anchor. The anchor’s introduction is often accompanied by an urgent-sounding musical cue and a red background for the on-air graphic. Depending on the importance of the event, the station’s logo may be displayed in a lower third or other graphic element as well. This type of interruption is most common on 24-hour news networks that are ready to interrupt at any moment. In the past, such breaks were only used for highly serious events that warranted a national emergency requiring immediate coverage.

Joe Rogan says President Trump’s fast-tracked research into psychedelic treatments is all because of one text from a podcaster. Also, Hallie Jackson goes to a remote stretch of New Mexico to shed light on the latest questions surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch.
