About
Trending brings you stories from across the country and beyond that are making headlines right now.
Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio news broadcast that interrupts the current non-news program, or in the case of 24-hour news channels, regular, ongoing live newscasts, to provide information about an urgent event. It may also be referred to as Newsflash or Special Report and typically starts with an alert, often accompanied by a distinctive music cue, that signals the audience to stand by for a brief interruption. It was once a rare occurrence for a major breaking news story to interrupt any broadcast, but has become more common since the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels. Sometimes the newsflash or Special Report is accompanied by an on-air anchor who provides analysis. In addition, lower thirds or other graphics are often modified to convey the urgency of the story. This is especially true of severe weather events, such as tornadoes or landfalling hurricanes. Historically, these breaks were reserved for stories of national significance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that prompted nationwide coverage and required many stations to interrupt their programming at once.
