When an event occurs that elicits national coverage and requires television, radio, or Internet broadcast stations to interrupt regular programming (or, for network newscasts, their regularly scheduled newscast), the interruption is referred to as breaking news. This may last for only a few minutes or may require several hours of sustained coverage. In the latter case, analysis of the event may be provided through analysts either in-studio or by telephone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means of communication. The network will usually alert its affiliates to the event through a special graphic and distinctive music cue; the network will also provide a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch over to the breaking news report. Often, lower thirds and other graphics will be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
