Breaking news is the name given to a news event that elicits national coverage and requires stations to interrupt regularly scheduled programming. The breaking news is normally displayed on a network’s feed, with an alert crawl, and often accompanied by distinctive music cues. The newsflash or special report graphics used to accompany breaking news may feature lower thirds and other graphic elements that are altered to convey urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were generally reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The interruption of non-news programming can be done through a countdown sequence, or simply by cutting back to the breaking news anchors.
