When a breaking news event occurs that warrants the interruption of normal programming (or in some cases, regular network newscasts), stations will use an opening graphic and distinctive music cue to alert viewers to stand by. This is typically followed by a countdown sequence from the network to allow local affiliates to switch over to the network feed, and then a breaking news segment begins. Breaking news often requires sustained coverage that may last minutes, hours or even days. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions for breaking news were usually reserved for events with widespread national impact such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
