Breaking News is a segment of a television or radio broadcast that focuses on an urgent topic. This type of coverage typically interrupts ongoing non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, a live feed from a network affiliate station). If an event is deemed so important that it requires nationwide coverage, a countdown sequence will be displayed on screen for affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed. This segment is sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash”, or “Special Report” and may use distinctive music cues. Before 24-hour news networks existed, such interruptions were typically reserved for events that elicited nationwide attention and required a large number of stations to interrupt their programming simultaneously.
