Breaking news is an event that warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of network television broadcasters, a regularly scheduled newscast. This type of news is usually announced through a special graphic and music cue. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such as CNN and NBC News, these breaks were limited to extremely urgent events that demanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their own programming. The breaking news is then presented by a network news anchor, who may also incorporate analysis about the news through in-studio guests or via remote locations.
