When a news event occurs that imposes a sudden and urgent obligation on the media to interrupt non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour networks, even regularly scheduled newscasts, the network will usually alert its affiliated stations by telling them to stand by for the breaking news event. This will be followed by a countdown sequence on the station imaging promo or lower thirds, after which the national network feed will begin, typically overlaid with a special graphic with a distinctive music cue. The breaking news event may last for a few minutes or for several hours or even days.
