Whenever an urgent event breaks, a network news program will interrupt regular non-news programming, or in the case of 24-hour networks, regularly scheduled newscasts. This is commonly known as breaking news or a newsflash, and it usually includes a distinctive audio cue and a graphic with the current story. If a national network’s newscast is interrupted, the station will usually pause and issue an alert for its affiliates to switch to the feed. Depending on the story, this may be followed by a short segment or sustained coverage which can last for hours, days, or even weeks. Often, lower thirds and other graphics will be modified to convey urgency.
