When a news event occurs that is so significant as to warrant interrupting regular, non-news programming or, in the case of a network newscast, a regularly scheduled breaking news segment within a program, the networks typically have a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker on screen, usually with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. This is often accompanied by a countdown sequence, to allow affiliated stations to switch over to the feed. This was a common feature on radio and TV until 24-hour news channels became more prevalent, and is now often used at major network affiliates in place of regular cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programming.
