Intensifying fighting in the Middle East between Israeli Defense Forces and the militant group known as The Palestinian Islamic Jihad has left at least 24 dead as an exchange of missiles escalated on its second day. Israel began the fighting with a barrage of missiles it said was meant to preempt an imminent Palestinian attack. Palestinian Islamic Jihad responded by firing at least 100 rockets into Israel overnight. Israel intercepted most of the attacks, according to its defense ministry.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will hold its graduation ceremonies on May 6 and 7. The ceremonies will honor the 2,356 eligible graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the School of Science and Technology (SIUE). CAS President Dianah McGreehan will deliver the commencement speech. She will present the graduates with honorary plaques and $100 as well. Further, Chancellor James T. Minor will confer honorary degrees on outstanding students.
