About Trending
When a major breaking news event occurs that demands the immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, a national network will often run an urgent, top-of-the-hour special report or “Newsflash” with distinct music cues. During the countdown sequence, affiliate stations are asked to “stand by” and switch to the network feed. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of interruptive coverage was limited to events that elicited nationwide interest, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required many stations across the country to interrupt their scheduled newscasts. During the special report, lower third graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
