When a significant and urgent news event occurs, broadcasters will interrupt regular non-news programming (or occasionally regularly scheduled newscasts) to present live coverage. The breaking news segment may last only a few minutes, or continue for hours or days as new information becomes available. In the United States, this segment is often called a Newsflash or Special Report, or sometimes Breaking News (and is not to be confused with news alerts during normal non-news programming which are typically shown using a cut-in crawl and may or may not include station imaging or program reminders). This practice was common before 24-hour news channels became available and was more common in North America for severe weather events that would require an immediate interruption of current programming.
