A breaking news story is a news event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, a pause in regular scheduled broadcasting to provide live coverage of the story. When this occurs, stations typically begin with a countdown sequence (or an overlay graphic that indicates a news break), followed by the network feed. Depending on the severity of the event, the news segment may last only minutes or may continue for hours or even days. In recent years, major networks have begun using “Newsflash” and “Special report” tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need to interrupt for such coverage.
