Authorities are hailing a 22-year-old civilian as a hero after he killed a gunman. The good Samaritan, identified as Elisjsha Dicken, was legally carrying a handgun at an Indiana mall when a 20-year-old gunman entered the food court. Investigators say the gunman went to the restroom, stayed for an hour where he stashed his phone in the toilet, and then emerged with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun. He started shooting, killing three people and injuring a 12-year-old girl, before he was killed.

Breaking news is a term used to describe the newest story in a news broadcast. This term can be applied to anything from the August 2017 North Korea crisis to the hottest topics in science and technology. While breaking news is not always the best way to describe a story, the term is commonly used to describe stories that have the potential to capture public attention. A breaking news story is a story that has not yet been covered by a mainstream media outlet.
When a national network newscast is breaking news, they pause the feed to allow the other network affiliates to join in the feed. Breaking news graphics may feature music to emphasize the breaking nature of the story. The anchor will introduce the story and may change the lower third to convey the feeling of urgency. If the story is breaking news, it may end with a disclaimer or a pause, stating “more information is available at the link below.”
A special report format will often contain an internal alert service. When the broadcaster has news to report, all affiliates will receive a notice and the network feed will switch to a reverse countdown. In most cases, this countdown will start at 5 seconds, although it may be longer for local television stations. If breaking news happens during prime time, the broadcaster may decide to air some segment of the news, while other programming is cut. However, breaking news can interrupt highly rated programs, even those with time left to air.
