In 1980, Ted Turner launched the Cable News Network. It was not long before CBS tried to buy it. The network was not popular at first.

Eventually, CNN spawned MSNBC and Fox News Channel. However, these news operations have been criticized for their lack of viewership.

Streaming news has proven that it can attract large, specialized audiences. In fact, major news networks have already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.

The emergence of streaming has been driven by a convergence of cultural trends. Consumer frustration over low-quality, high-cost products, in addition to the proliferation of options, has created an environment that encourages new players to enter the market.

Streaming allows viewers to customize the experience. They can access current events, reruns, documentaries, and news analysis.

Streaming networks have the ability to archive their content and reach audiences wherever they go. This helps to create economic opportunities for news libraries. But there is also a fear that the new choices may fuel audience polarization.

Streaming executives are attempting to avoid over-hyping the technology. Instead, they are focusing on creating content that focuses on quality.

Fox, CBS, and ABC have all invested in streaming. They are planning regular nightly news programs, and are repurposing their programming for the streaming medium. All three of these news outlets are also pursuing local streaming news strategies.

Unlike traditional TV, online video streaming will not be constrained by cable companies’ limited TV licenses. It is also a low-barrier entry point for overtly political news operations.
