TV news has lived on the airwaves for decades. But new video streaming techniques have the potential to change the way we get our news. It could even reshape political coverage.
There’s no doubt that the best way to deliver current news is on television, but there are other ways to do it, such as through streaming. Streaming allows networks to archive and deliver content whenever and wherever it’s wanted. This is a big deal for newscasters, who see audiences diminishing.
Aside from a few nitpicky concerns, streaming news has the potential to change how people receive and consume information. For one thing, it enables broadcasters to produce television-quality content without being bound by expensive negotiations with cable companies.
Streaming also reduces the cost to build news libraries. In addition to allowing viewers to stream live events, it also allows networks to repurpose programming they already have.
It’s not surprising that major streaming networks have high hopes for their product. They’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. Some have even been able to produce reruns of old television shows and documentaries.
What’s more, it’s possible for news outlets to customize their offerings to match the tastes of individual viewers. And the ability to tailor news to a niche audience is a boon for both news organizations and consumers.
The Internet is also an excellent source of data for news organizations. In the case of a major earthquake, for example, there is a wealth of information available to reporters.
