Breaking news is the term used for an urgent story that necessitates an immediate interruption of regular programming to provide coverage. This can be for an ongoing event such as severe weather or an unfolding tragedy, or a one-time event such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or other historical events that elicit nationwide coverage and require numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming for an extended period of time. The event is often introduced through a network newsflash or special report, and may be preceded by a countdown sequence on the national network feed to give affiliates time to join in.
