Current News (sometimes called breaking news or special report) is an interruption of programming aimed at reporting the latest information on a news event, usually an extremely important one. It is usually assigned to the most significant or highest-impact story, though in practice it may also be used for less important stories that warrant immediate coverage.

When a breaking news event occurs, national network newscasts will usually pause to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. An opening graphic, often featuring music and a countdown from 5 seconds to the start of the newscast, is then rolled as the anchor introduces the event, followed by a live shot or video of the event.

The network or station will then continue covering the story in a manner that conveys the urgency of the situation, such as by integrating analysis and commentary from experts in-studio, via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or other means of communication. The length of the coverage depends on how urgent and important the story is, and can range from a few minutes to hours or even days at a time.

Breaking News Coverage Across Platforms

A breaking news episode usually has an outro that includes a promo directing viewers to a network’s website and other platforms for continued coverage, as well as a full wrap-up on the evening or morning network newscast if applicable. Regular daytime and late-night programming is joined in progress or started back up at the point of the interruption, depending on the program’s ratings, its time slot, and its status as a pre-empted segment.
