Breaking news is a news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, or sometimes even a scheduled regular newscast. When breaking events occur that require a national network to interrupt a program, the network usually alerts its affiliate stations with a countdown sequence; the station then goes into an emergency break, often overlaid with a special graphic and distinctive music cue. Depending on the nature of the story, breaking reports may last for a few minutes or continue for multiple hours or days. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, breaks were limited to extremely urgent news events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, or severe weather warnings.
