Generally, a breaking news story is one that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of a network newscast, a segment of the program). Before 24-hour television news networks existed, such interruptions were rare, and typically reserved for very urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted the entire country to break into regular programming to report the event immediately. When a network breaks into programming, it usually begins with a graphic and distinctive music cue to signal the change and alert viewers that they are interrupting normal broadcasts. The network also typically sends a signal to its affiliates, telling them to stand by for a special report.
A group in Boston is giving LGBTQ immigrants wellness allowances to help them afford things like yoga and haircuts. CBS News reports on the risky voyage a team from the news division took into the Strait of Hormuz. And Hallie Jackson takes a closer look at why Jeffrey Epstein’s former ranch wasn’t searched sooner. All that and more on this week’s episode of Current News.
