Breaking news is a television or radio news story of sufficient importance to interrupt regular non-news programming or, until the era of 24-hour news networks, the regularly scheduled network newscast itself. If the breaking event is significant enough, network affiliates are usually alerted with a countdown and asked to stand by for the network feed.
