A breaking news event is a television or radio broadcast that interrupts current non-news programming, and in some cases, regular network newscasts, to provide live coverage. This is most common with 24-hour news networks, where an anchor is always available to interrupt and cover a breaking story. This type of reporting also commonly occurs during severe weather events, such as tornadoes or landfalling hurricanes. During such reports, the network may provide analysis through in-studio or phone interviews with analysts and other sources, and typically uses lower thirds and other graphics to indicate that the program is being interrupted for live coverage. Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were rare and limited to exceptionally urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
