Trending is the term used to describe news stories that are currently popular or trending online. This type of news is typically featured on the homepage of a website or social media platform and may be highlighted through a ticker or other graphics that appear throughout a site. Trending news is often also featured in on-air broadcasts through station imaging promos or program reminders. In some cases, breaking news events can require an interruption of regular programming (often on network affiliates) to provide immediate coverage. These kinds of interrupts are often referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. In addition, 24-hour news networks frequently use special breaking news tickers during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for cut-ins.
