Current News is the name of a special report that appears on a television or radio station’s screen when breaking news occurs. When such an event is of sufficient significance to warrant an interruption in regular non-news programming or, as was the case until recently with 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled newscasts, a network will alert its affiliates by interrupting their feed and usually displaying a countdown sequence (and possibly a music cue) to allow affiliated stations to join the feed before the breaking news begins. The resulting news segment, sometimes called a Newsflash or a Special Report, may last only a few minutes, or extend for several hours or even days.
