A breaking news story is a piece of current news that is so time-sensitive or important that it warrants the interruption of non-news programming. Such events are often referred to as “newsflash” or “special report” and can occur anywhere from local to national levels.
Until 24-hour news networks became common, such interruptions were rare and usually restricted to major events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, when the networks would interrupt regular programming for live coverage. In recent years, some networks have introduced tickers for certain breaking news stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for network affiliates to use cut-ins.
