Breaking News
When a major national or international event happens that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts, a breaking news alert is used. The alert is usually announced through a graphics overlay or countdown sequence with a distinctive music cue and is often followed by an announcer who welcomes viewers to the reporting of the story. The report can last only a few minutes or multiple hours or days, depending on the severity of the event. In addition to the specialized graphics and music cues, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
