Breaking News is a feature of television and radio programs that interrupts current non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, regularly scheduled programming) to cover a significant or urgent event. Typically, a countdown is given before the interruption begins, and station identification will appear over the opening graphic. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey a sense of urgency. This type of coverage is most common with severe weather events, though it was used occasionally prior to the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels for breaking stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
