When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming, television and radio stations typically notify viewers by interrupting non-news programming with a graphic that reads “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Alternatively, some networks, especially those operating 24-hour news channels, may use a ticker for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, reducing the need for cut-ins. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Depending on the event, the news report may last only minutes or continue for several hours. Earlier, break-ins and alert crawls during regular programming were only used for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
