When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or even a network newscast (if it’s already in progress), a special graphic and countdown sequence will be used to alert viewers to the impending interrupt. If the story is of nationwide interest, a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker may be shown instead of the usual lower thirds. NBC, for example, has also begun to use this style of break in its regular newscasts.
