Breaking News is a news story that elicits such widespread public interest as to warrant nationwide coverage by interrupting regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network television, regularly scheduled network newscasts). In addition to the normal station identification cut-in and lower third graphics, “breaking” news events may be marked with a special graphic overlay or the use of a distinctive music cue.

Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, programs were interrupted only for severe weather or other events that posed immediate dangers to people’s lives, property, or safety; now these interruptions are commonplace.
