Current News is a news report based on an ongoing story that needs immediate coverage. A breaking news event can trigger a national network to interrupt its regular non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour networks, regularly scheduled newscasts in order to deliver an urgent and important update about the story. The interruption is often accompanied by a countdown sequence and a special graphic overlay on the screen, with a distinctive music cue. Breaking news may be followed by additional analysis, and if the story demands it, regular commercials are suspended. Other names for this type of reporting include Newsflash, Emergency Broadcast and Special Report.
