Using breaking news as an attention getter is a tried and true tactic. A good news story will usually be accompanied by a brief announcement, a graphic, and a catchy tune. However, the music and the announcement may not be the most important part of the news report.
A breaking news theme is typically a loud, urgent one, with a tenor that is recognizable to listeners. During a time of breaking news, the network may also pause for a few seconds to allow affiliates to join in.
When a network breaks news, it will typically announce the event using a catchy graphic. The story may also be introduced by a live anchor. Sometimes, a news reporter will be sent to the scene of the breaking news to report on the story. Other times, a reporter may cut away to a video of the story.
The network may also integrate the news story into their normal daytime and late night programming. For example, if a political leader is scheduled to give a speech, the network may preempt the program a few weeks in advance to give the anchor enough time to prepare.
Sometimes, a breaking news story is so important, the news station will choose to end their nightly newscast in favor of breaking news coverage. Often, the station will provide an outro promo that directs viewers to the network website or streaming news channels.
