This term is interchangeable with late breaking news, special report, or coverage. While this term can be used to refer to any news, it often reflects an event that is happening at a moment’s notice. This term can also refer to a story that is of widespread interest, but is not breaking news in its own right.
Breaking news often begins with a headline – a large bold print at the top of the centerfold of a newspaper. It’s meant to attract the attention of prospective readers and customers. Trending news is focused on readers and often has little impact on society. A story can be “trending” based on its impact on society, but it must be of interest to a large segment of the population. Breaking news may also include video from a local television station.
Pre-emptions can also interrupt local programming. Pre-emptions are often scheduled a day or two in advance. Pre-emptions can be scheduled for events related to impeachment proceedings, for example. Networks may provide notices to viewers about future interruptions and special topical graphics can be created for those events. But while these are only two examples of how Current News can interrupt prime time programming, they are not always the best option.
