When a story breaks that is so urgent that it must interrupt regular programming, such as an event such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a severe weather event, it is commonly known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report.” When this occurs, the network will halt their regularly scheduled newscast and issue a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. Depending on the nature of the event, it may require ongoing coverage for hours or even days. In such cases, lower thirds and other graphics are used to convey urgency. This type of breaking news was common before the advent of 24-hour news networks.
