The term “breaking news” is commonly used to describe events that are happening in real time, but what is breaking news? In television news, this term refers to a story that is new, live, or significant. It also refers to an event that is of broad interest to viewers. However, because 24-hour news channels frequently air “breaking news,” breaking news is becoming redundant. In addition to breaking news, the term can refer to no news at all.
A single news story can last a few minutes, while an entire day can be consumed by a single event. A single event can take days, like the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, or as long as five days for the September 11 attacks. Depending on the size of the event, networks may also integrate analysis, using satellite, phone, or studio sources. Some networks will even suspend regular commercials while covering a story.
