The current news is the story happening in the present moment. It may be an ongoing event or it may be a single incident of interest to the viewer that is being followed live by a broadcaster.

Depending on the magnitude of the story, broadcasters may decide to pre-empt their regular programming with a breaking news report or an extended edition of their program. This is typically done by announcing to all of the stations in an area if it warrants a cut-in from their network feed. The announcement is normally made by an anchor or a voiceover that announces that the newscast has been interrupted to report the latest developments of the story at hand.

In many cases, the opening graphic is changed to reflect the importance of the story being covered and music often plays (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events” soundtrack). A news anchor or other personality will then introduce the story at hand and explain what is happening.

If the story is significant enough, and if the station is able to send a reporter to the scene of the break, the coverage may be passed along to the local reporter, with the promise of more details as they become available. However, because of the rapidity of news reporting, it is common for early breaking news reports to be sketchy. This is especially true for weather news, as the initial threat may not be immediate.
