During a breaking news event, a television station may be given the opportunity to interrupt the program or newscast. The station will have to decide whether to break away from the network feed and produce its own newscast, or to continue to broadcast the newscast as normal. The program may also be interrupted for a brief moment to allow for other network affiliates to join the feed.
A breaking news event may be interrupted for a few minutes, or it may last for several hours. If the news is a news story that has wide interest among the general public, the station may choose to broadcast a full report.
The news is usually reported by a news anchor. The anchor may use music to emphasize the importance of the news. The anchor may also alter the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency. The anchor may also remind viewers that more details will be available on the local news.
The news may be relayed by a station’s internal alert service. It may also be passed on to a reporter at the location of the breaking event. If the news is a news story about professional sports, the station may be careful not to relay the story during a play-by-play broadcast.
The network may continue to show a live shot of the anchor as the news breaks, or may cut away to a video of the news story. When the coverage is over, the station will often switch to the newscast.
