Breaking news is the term for news events that are so urgent or important that a broadcaster interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). The occurrence of breaking news often requires a countdown to allow affiliate stations to switch to the national feed. The graphic displaying this countdown is typically called a Newsflash or Special Report. Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage that required many stations to break into their normal programming.
