About Current News
Before 24-hour news networks became common, breaking news — often called a “newsflash” or “special report” — would interrupt regular programming to alert viewers to important news events that require immediate coverage. These breaks, or “cut-ins,” were especially prevalent for severe weather such as tornado warnings. When a break occurred, the network’s feed would pause and start a countdown sequence to allow affiliate stations to switch over to the breaking news feed.
