Gas prices soaring nationwide

Though inflation cooled slightly in December, gas prices have been on the rise; the national average has surged nearly 40 cents in the last month. Streaming TV has ushered in a new way of reporting current news. While streaming still looks like conventional TV, it delivers the news wherever the viewer is. It has also proven to attract niche audiences.

For decades, news on television was reported in a linear fashion. Depending on what time of day, viewers would either match the programmers’ clock or watch live events. The difference between broadcast news and cable news was that the cable programmers could one-up broadcast news by broadcasting live events, and the TV programmers were able to report the news as it happened.

During the early days of cable, the newscasters saw their audiences drop and they were forced to nichify their coverage. This meant a greater focus on entertainment rather than on breaking news. In a 2005 study, Princeton University scholar Markus Prior argued that the increased number of media choices encouraged viewers to narrow their political stances.

Eventually, this led to a polarization in the media landscape. A large segment of the audience avoided news that challenged their beliefs. They preferred to follow the entertainment they were watching instead.

As the market for cable broadcasters began to decline, networks such as CNN and Fox began to offer online video streams. These streams looked much like cable, except they were free. With the rise of ad blockers and a growing audience for streaming, networks saw a chance to capitalize on the growing demand for online video news.
