Trending is a breaking news story that is a current topic of discussion and debate. It is typically accompanied by a graphic that highlights the topic and often has a distinct music cue, as well as a live interruption of the newscast in which it appears. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such programming interruptions were rare and generally reserved for extremely urgent events such as a presidential assassination, or severe weather that threatened public safety. Breaking news is also sometimes referred to as Newsflash, Special Report or the shortened version Newsbreak. This is in contrast to news crawls or lower third graphics used during regularly scheduled newscasts.
